Topical Fluoride Varnish Application
Rationale for Use
Topical fluoride helps strengthen the enamel matrix through the incorporation of fluoride in the matrix. This makes the matrix more resistant to acidic threats from both cariogenic bacteria and various other extrinsic forms of acid.
Some forms of topical fluoride that contain supplemental minerals like calcium and phosphate contain milk protein deriviatives. These products should be avoided in people with milk protein allergies.
Directions for Use
Teeth should be relatively dry prior to application. A cotton roll or air syringe can be used to dry teeth.
Apply a thin layer of varnish on the teeth with a brush
Allow the varnish to remain undisturbed on the teeth for about 4 hours. Hot, hard, or sticky foods should be avoided during this time as well as brushing and flossing. Alcohol containing beverages or mouth rinses should also be avoided.
After the varnish has been on the teeth for the recommended 4 hours, any remaining material can be removed by regular brushing and flossing.
If the patient is using MI Paste Plus, it should not be used on the day of topical fluoride varnish application. Its use can be resumed the next day.
